UV rays, air pollution, lifestyle habits, and psychological stress all contribute to the production of “free radicals”. Free radicals are a highly reactive and unstable molecular species that attack other molecules and cells in our body to gain stability. These reactions lead to cell damage and cell death, a process also known as “oxidation” – a term you’ve probably heard of somewhere.
Oxidation speeds up your skin’s aging process, causing concerns such as wrinkles, a dull complexion, saggy skin, or hyperpigmentation.
Antioxidants – what are they, then?
Antioxidant = Anti free radical = Anti-aging!
Due to their characteristics, antioxidants are able to react with free radicals and stabilize them to reduce the damage done to your skin. So the stronger an antioxidant is, the stronger your skin’s defense against free radicals will be – the key to enjoying healthy skin and slowing down the signs of aging.
Antioxidants in skincare products
Vitamin A |
Combats free radicals to promote skin recovery and adjust the metabolism of the stratum corneum, hence improving skin texture. However, its lack of stability and possible irritation steers it towards those with more tolerant skin.
|
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
|
Widely known as an antioxidant, vitamin C is powerful in neutralizing free radicals to inhibit damage and protect your skin. It’s also great at treating uneven skin tone.
|
Vitamin E (tocopherol) |
Has strong antioxidant properties that protect cell membranes against oxidation damage. Scavenges free radicals and stabilizes them to strengthen your skin’s immunity and prevent the loss of collagen, which helps to prevent fine lines and wrinkles.
|
Natural plant extracts
|
Green tea extract, blackberry extract and pomegranate extract are common antioxidants.

Pretties’ selection of antioxidant skincare products, from budding K-beauty brands to established big names:
This serum contains 1% pure retinol (a type of vitamin A), which takes care of photodamage and reduces fine and dynamic lines caused by a loss in collagen and elastin. Its formula is supported by the moisturizing agent squalane and is good for any skin type.
An undiluted retinol (a type of vitamin A) serum that is light on the skin and easily seeps through the stratum corneum. This serum contains VC-IP (ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate), a skin-friendly vitamin C derivative that can be quickly absorbed. Its brilliant skin-brightening effects are a given; but this serum also helps with inhibiting cell aging and promotes the production of collagen.
Works alongside bakuchiol, a plant-derived natural antioxidant that shares the effects of retinol but with less irritation, to give you firm and elastic skin.
